Rogue Tech Talks: March 2023

People are beginning to socialize once again, as evidenced by the turnout for our March Meeting. There were more responses to the broadcast, accompanied by strong interest from those who had schedule conflicts for this month but want to attend in the future. Great!

The March Meeting was dominated by a discussion of the Powers of ChatGPT (GPT = Generative Pre-trained Transformer), “a large language model [using deep learning and neural networks] that is trained on huge amounts of existing written material…a type of deep learning software presented as a chat window which the user then uses to input a prompt or keyword or phrase.”

Corey gave a brief talk that described the amazing results of his experience with ChatGPT to do a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Proofreading, grammar checking, and rewriting of emails
  • Discussion Topics
  • Jokes (knock knock)
  • Common open ports
  • Generating regex (regular expression language) commands for detecting DDos (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks in a SIEM (Security Information and Event Management)
  • Writing poems
  • Fixing a Visual Basic function
  • Converting code
  • Creating a 911 chat bot
  • Writing a story
  • Generating shopping lists specific to stores
  • Rewriting SQL queries for efficiency
  • Building weightlifting schedules
  • Building travel schedules
  • Providing SQL conversion help
  • Recommending popular text editors
  • Being Joshua from “WarGames” (link to War Games Quotes)

He followed-up by sending me an email outlining these tasks and, at the bottom, beneath his signature, was a P.S.: “This email was generated by ChatGPT.” Amazing!

We proceeded to discuss a variety of topics of interest to all present, including where to have our meetings. After considering options of Tap and Vine, Elements, Shiki and Bar Juliet (in Ashland), the consensus was to continue meeting at Outback in Medford. While the ambient noise can be an occasional challenge, this venue provides a variety of great food, excellent service, convenient location, and comfortable table seating. The only thing lacking is a private space for the occasional presentation that includes a slide show; for that, we can meet at Shiki.

As all of our lives return to normal, we hope to have more techies join us. All techies are welcome each First Thursday of Every Month! And, if you would like to present on a topic of general educational interest to the group, please contact the Concierge.
